Intermediate open canoe skills training

A 1-day training course, 10am - 5pm with breaks.

Aimed at Open Canoeists that want to improve their technical paddle strokes, journeying skills & rescues with focused, bespoke coaching. For Solo or Tandem Paddlers.

If you have achieved the Discover Award, or hold BCU 1* or 2*, this is the ideal opportunity to improve your paddle skills, learn new strokes and refine your current repertoire. As a series of sessions it can even take you as far as the new BC Canoe Award.

The day may focus on themes such as; forward paddling strokes, rudders & cuts, displacement draws & prys, braces and supports, cross deck strokes, backwater strokes and combinations such as pivot turns. Even how to combine with another paddler as an effective tandem pair. A rescue session may focus on; canoe to canoe rescues, peer and solo rescues and re-entry. Journeying skills such as polling, sailing and lining may also be covered as the monthly sessions progress.

A training opportunity that can be attended time and again improving your skill set each and every time!

Not suitable for beginners.

This is a 1-day course, 10am - 5pm with breaks for solo or tandem paddlers

  • Paddlecraft: Open Canoes (we supply the craft or you can bring your own)

  • The course takes place on The Royal Military Canal located between Hythe and Seabrook.

  • Minimum of 3 participants for the course to run.

  • Arrive 15 minutes before the session time to get kitted out (we provide all the equipment)

  • Please read our Social Distancing page

  • Paddlers will need to bring own lunch and drinks

  • Minimum age: 16

CONTENT

The content will vary from month to month, and paddlers may wish to continue attending to build their skills. A single day of training may focus on themes such as:

Forward paddling strokes

Rudders & cuts

Displacement draws & prys

Braces and supports

Cross deck strokes

Backwater strokes and combinations such as pivot turns.

How to combine with another paddler as an effective tandem pair.

Note: Our Centre is located on Prince’s Parade, and is in view of the seafront. If driving from Folkestone, turn left onto Prince’s Parade and Seapoint will be the second turning on your right, the car park is signposted. There is pay and display parking in the carpark adjacent to the centre, metred parking is also available on Prince’s Parade (bring coins for this or use the RINGO app).
